Normal service is resumed up on Newport canal!
During the winter the canal volunteers have done sterling work to strip back the line of Meretown lock. Earlier this week Cllr Tim Nelson and volunteers were clearing away old rubble and stonework in the rain. But all healthy outdoor work and cares for the canal.
Seven years ago the lock was overgrown and constricted but with a vast amount of volunteer work, contributions from Newport Town Council and some imagination it looks as good as it would have done back when it was built as you can see from the historical photograph on this post.
One of the best things about this area of "Newport canal corner" is that the initial vision to improve has now been grasped, first by Newport in Bloom and then more recently by Newport town council with their taking ownership of the Black shed and little Ticket house. There is still much more that we can do and we have the ambition to do it. For a start, Cllr Nelson wants to get a boat back on the canal!
